The discount on public transport fares in Lagos, introduced on August 2, 2023, by the Sanwo-Olu administration to mitigate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal, has been revoked by the Lagos State Government.
In an official announcement made on Saturday, November 4, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) declared a return to the previous public transport rates, effective from November 5.
"The 50% reduction in transport fares for the regulated transport system in Lagos will conclude on Sunday," conveyed the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in a statement on Saturday.
This notice apprised commuters that commencing on Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fares will revert to the rates that were in place prior to August 2, 2023. It further recommended that residents of Lagos take note of this change and make the necessary arrangements for the resumption of the regular transport fare rates that were in effect before the adjustments made in August.
Governor Sanwo-Olu had, on July 31, introduced a 50% reduction in transport fares for state-owned buses and a 25% reduction for commercial yellow buses on all routes as part of the measures to alleviate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.
