Alabama Mayor and Pastor Takes His Own Life After Being Publicly Revealed as Transgender

A mayor and preacher in Alabama, F.L. "Bubba" Copeland, took his own life on November 3, two days after it was revealed that he had a secret online identity as a transgender woman named Brittini Blaire Summerlin.

Copeland was married and had three children. His suicide occurred when the police were conducting a welfare check and began following his car. He exited the vehicle, produced a handgun, and took his own life in front of the sheriff's deputies.

His secret life as Brittini involved sharing pictures of himself in women's clothing and encouraging others to consider hormone replacement therapy. He also posted transgender-related content, including pornography and fiction.

Copeland initially described his online alter ego as a harmless hobby, known only to his wife. He insisted that it had no impact on his roles as mayor and pastor, stating that his private life was separate from his public life.

After the exposé was published, Copeland delivered a sermon at his church, addressing the scandal and downplaying the online content as an attempt at humor.

In 2019, Copeland had led his city in recovering from a devastating tornado, and he had met with then-President Donald Trump.

In a previous interview, Copeland had discussed the prevalence of suicide in his community, identifying it as a significant issue, possibly influenced by the military and social media.
