A 54-year-old man, Jegede Folorunsho, has been placed in custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over allegations of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl in the Mushin area of Lagos State.
On Monday, November 20, 2023, Folorunsho faced charges of defilement of the minor before Magistrate O.M. Ajayi at a Magistrate Court in the Ebute Metta area of the state.
The police submitted a remand application, urging the court to detain the defendant in prison custody and to authorize the duplication and transmission of the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal guidance.
Police prosecutor Paul Ugorji informed the court that Folorunsho purportedly committed the rape at No 4 Adegbite Lane, Mushin, Lagos on October 4, 2023.
The Mushin Police Division arrested the defendant based on the victim's complaint, subsequently transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for a thorough investigation.
Ugorji pointed out that the alleged act contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015. The police presented a confessional statement written by the defendant to the court.
The charge, along with the 12-paragraph remand application, stated, “That you, Jegede Folorunsho, on October 4, 2023, at No 4 Adegbite Lane, Mushin Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did defile one girl (name withheld), a minor of eight years, by having carnal knowledge of her and thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The defendant did not enter a plea following the remand application. The magistrate granted the police's request, ordering Folorunsho's remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
Additionally, she instructed the case file to be forwarded to the DPP for legal advice and scheduled the next hearing for December 15, 2023.
