Peter Obi Criticizes FG's Luxury Yacht Amidst National Crisis Unawareness

The Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria is currently facing a significant crisis.

Obi has accused the Federal Government (FG) of neglecting the most crucial national needs in the Supplementary Budget recently signed into law. He points out that this supplementary budget includes provisions for a "mysterious Presidential Yacht," Presidential Jets, the furnishing of already opulently furnished presidential quarters and offices, and fleets of luxury SUVs.

In a recent piece published on X, Obi offers his perspective on the Supplementary Budget, stating, "A supplementary budget is meant to address vital national welfare needs that were not initially covered in the primary budget or require additional funding. While it is acknowledged that some items in the current budget may not adequately cater to the requirements of a new administration, a supplementary budget introduced late in the financial year should predominantly address urgent national welfare concerns."

Regrettably, Obi argues that the most critical national needs and emergencies have been overlooked in the supplementary budget announcement by the government. For instance, he highlights the recent alerts from the United Nations and the World Food Programme, which predict that up to 6.5 million Nigerians will face hunger in the coming year, mainly in Sokoto, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Zamfara States. In response, Obi emphasizes that a compassionate government would seek supplementary budget provisions to alleviate the impending catastrophe.

Obi goes on to express his disappointment that the supplementary budget lacks any provisions for urgent social welfare needs. Instead, it focuses on items such as the mysterious Presidential Yacht, Presidential Jets, and the enhancement of already extravagantly furnished presidential residences and offices. This, in Obi's view, indicates a government that is insensitive and uncaring about the suffering of the majority and is disconnected from the nation's prevailing sentiment.

He further criticizes the government's attitude, asserting that it fails to recognize the enormous crisis that the country is facing and is out of touch with the struggles of the common citizens. Obi also points out that a substantial portion of the funding for these extravagant expenses will be borrowed, which, in his opinion, is not what Nigerians expect during this challenging period. Instead, he believes that empathy and practical solutions should be the government's top priorities.
