Tinubu Vows Federal Government Support for Upcoming Census, Hails Nation's Population as Its Premier Asset

President Bola Tinubu has announced the Federal Government's commitment to providing full support to the National Population Commission (NPC) for the upcoming census, though he did not specify the date for this census. The President made this declaration during an event held on Wednesday, November 8, at the State House in Abuja, where the Digital Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System and the National Geospatial Data Repository were inaugurated.

Tinubu emphasized the significance of obtaining precise and trustworthy data on the size, distribution, composition, and characteristics of the nation's population. He highlighted that this is a crucial governance endeavor that aligns with the current administration's Renewed Hope Agenda. The President affirmed, "The Commission will, therefore, be fully supported in conducting the forthcoming census."

He underscored the pivotal role of Nigeria's population in the country's pursuit of becoming one of the world's largest economies, referring to it as the nation's greatest asset.

President Tinubu noted the timing of this commitment, as the Commission has made substantial progress in transitioning to a digital population and housing census. He expressed hope that the results of this census would provide essential data for development planning and the promotion of good governance.

In a related development, the House of Representatives recently engaged in a debate regarding the feasibility of conducting a census in the current year due to security concerns. Instead, they opted to initiate an investigation into the funds allocated for the postponed 2023 census by the NPC. Notably, the last national census in Nigeria was conducted in 2006.
