Organized labor has announced a nationwide strike set for Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in response to the unfortunate incident that occurred on Monday in Imo State. During a protest regarding unpaid wages by the Imo State Government, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, was manhandled by the police and subsequently taken into custody.
The NLC has alleged that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and the state Commissioner of Police, Barde, conspired to "abduct" Ajaero. This incident has ignited tensions and prompted labor leaders to take action.
On Friday, November 3, the Deputy President of NLC, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, and the Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), during a joint press briefing in Abuja, presented a six-point list of demands to the federal government in an effort to prevent the impending strike.
These demands include the immediate removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the area commander, and other state government officials who were implicated in the alleged assault on Ajaero and other workers who were humiliated during the incident.
Adeyanju Adewale, the Deputy President of NLC, and Tommy Okon, the Deputy President of TUC, addressed the press, shedding light on the situation:
"The NLC President was forcibly taken away by security personnel in Imo State and subjected to physical harm, along with other workers. His phone was confiscated, and journalists also suffered mistreatment, with crucial evidence being concealed from the public."
"We insist that Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, not only undergoes an investigation and redeployment but also faces accountability for his actions against Ajaero. The Area Commander and other officers who oversaw the brutal treatment of our President and fellow workers in Owerri must be relieved of their duties and stripped of their ranks."
"Mr. Nwaneri Chinasa, who supervised the attacks on workers and the brutal treatment of Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, must be promptly arrested and prosecuted for his actions against workers and the President. We demand a comprehensive examination of the physical and psychological injuries inflicted on the President, as well as the immediate restoration of any confiscated properties."
The labor unions are taking a firm stance to ensure justice and address the grievances of their members, with the strike scheduled as a means of putting pressure on the authorities to meet their demands.
