Mainz Football Club has officially terminated Anwar El Ghazi's contract due to his social media posts concerning the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The Dutch winger, who has previously played for Aston Villa and PSV, found himself suspended from training and match days with the German club after he expressed his support for Palestine on social media. However, Mainz recently lifted El Ghazi's suspension following what they described as an "in-depth conversation" with the player.
A statement from the club emphasized El Ghazi's commitment to their values, his display of remorse, and their culture of using mistakes as a learning opportunity. Consequently, they announced his imminent return to training and matchday-related activities with FSV Mainz 05.
On Wednesday, El Ghazi took to social media to clarify his stance, asserting that he had no regrets or remorse about his initial post and was firmly "against the killing of all civilians." In response, Mainz declared their intention to scrutinize the situation from a legal standpoint and evaluate the facts.
Ultimately, the Bundesliga side has decided to terminate El Ghazi's contract, with an official club statement stating, "FSV Mainz 05 is ending the contractual relationship with Anwar El Ghazi and terminated the player with immediate effect on Friday. The club is taking this measure in response to the player's statements and posts on social media."
El Ghazi, meanwhile, reiterated his position on Instagram, claiming that his statement from October 27 was his sole and final communication to both his club and the public. He emphasized his condemnation of the loss of innocent lives in Palestine and Israel, regardless of their nationality, and expressed his commitment to a peaceful and integrated Middle East region.
He concluded by clarifying that any other statements or comments purportedly made in his name were not accurate, reiterating his dedication to peace and humanity for all.
