The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has tendered an apology following the circulation of a video depicting the assault of a male student by one of its lecturers.
Reportedly, the 200-level student, identified as Gift, mistakenly entered a lecture room where Dr. Ariyo, the lecturer in question, was conducting a class.
Realizing his error, Gift attempted to leave the class but was called back by Dr. Ariyo. Subsequently, when Gift used his phone, the lecturer instructed him to turn it off and resorted to physical assault when the student did not comply.
The student claims that the lecturer accused him of impersonation.
Addressing the incident and expressing regret for the public display, the university's management released a statement, stating:
"The authorities of OAU have taken note of a viral video featuring a lecturer in the university allegedly assaulting a second-year student.
Disturbed by the content of the video, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Bamire, has intervened by establishing a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"The conduct depicted in the viral video is not reflective of our institution's character. We pride ourselves on being a community of decent and diligent individuals who do not tolerate any form of abuse or mistreatment.
We extend our sincere apologies to the public, particularly our esteemed alumni, whose sensitivities may have been offended by the incident.
"We urge our students to remain calm and focus on their regular academic activities. We assure all stakeholders that justice will be served in a fair and appropriate manner."
