The Labour Party's presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has strongly opposed the proposed acquisition of SUVs worth N60 billion for legislators in the country.
Obi criticized the move, labeling it as a continuation of a concerning trend in the nation. He argued that the federal government consistently neglects investments in critical sectors, asserting that with proper negotiation, one-third of the allocated amount could have been used to procure locally manufactured SUVs for the legislators. This, he believes, would not only contribute to boosting the Nigerian economy but also generate and sustain employment opportunities.
Drawing from his experience as the former Governor of Anambra state, Obi recalled a similar situation where he canceled an order for bulletproof cars. He emphasized his commitment to fiscal responsibility and efficient resource allocation.
In a statement, Obi expressed his dismay over the N60 billion expenditure on SUVs for about 400 legislators, criticizing the prioritization of luxury over crucial development areas. He pointed out the deteriorating state of primary healthcare, a vital development index, and highlighted the need to address pressing issues rather than indulging in unnecessary expenses.
Obi suggested that the substantial amount allocated for the SUVs could have been utilized to support local industries such as Innoson Motors, PAN, or other domestic auto assembly plants. This, in his view, would contribute to economic growth and job creation.
Recalling his past decision as Governor, Obi highlighted his commitment to prudent financial management. Instead of ordering bulletproof SUVs for official use, he opted to negotiate a concessionary pricing with Peugeot Automobiles, securing sixty 406 vehicles for government officials. This approach allowed for resource optimization and facilitated advancements in critical sectors like health, education, and poverty alleviation.
In conclusion, Obi urged all stakeholders involved to refrain from wasteful expenditures and advocated for a more transparent and fiscally responsible Nigeria. He emphasized the possibility of achieving a nation that prioritizes prudence in public resource management.
