Madrid Ambush: Spanish Politician Targeted and Shot in the Face

In a shocking incident in Madrid, a Spanish politician, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, 78, was targeted and shot in the face during an ambush. Vidal-Quadras, the former leader of Spain's People's Party in the Catalonia region, fell victim to the attack on Thursday, November 9, according to police sources.

The assault transpired around 1:30 pm on Núñez de Balboa street in the upscale Salamanca area of central Madrid. Witnesses disclosed that the politician was returning home from a church service when the incident occurred. Despite the severity of the attack, Vidal-Quadras remained conscious and was swiftly transported to the nearby Gregorio Marañón hospital for medical attention.

Law enforcement is actively pursuing two individuals who fled the scene on a motorbike, the assailant reportedly donning a black helmet. Witnesses characterized the attacker as a 'young, small man,' dressed in jeans and a dark coat, strategically positioned for the politician's passage. The shooting was executed without any verbal exchange, as the assailant approached Vidal-Quadras at close range before quickly escaping on the waiting motorcycle.

The area of the shooting has been cordoned off by the police, but as of now, no arrests have been made. The motive behind the attack remains unknown. Hospital staff at Gregorio Marañón hospital confirmed Vidal-Quadras' stable condition with a single gunshot wound to the jaw.

Expressing concern and condemnation, Popular Party president Alberto Nunez Feijoo conveyed his well-wishes for Vidal-Quadras' recovery. Vidal-Quadras, who previously led the center-right PP in Catalonia and served as the Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014, later joined the newly formed party Vox.

Madrid Police's homicide unit has initiated an investigation into the incident, with forensic teams meticulously examining the crime scene. Vox president Santiago Abascal provided reassurance, stating that Vidal-Quadras' life does not appear to be in immediate danger, expressing gratitude for his apparent escape from a life-threatening situation.
