A 14-year-old boy reportedly took his own life in Cross River using a shoelace

Tragic Incident: 14-Year-Old Boy in Calabar Takes His Own Life

A heart-wrenching incident occurred in Calabar, Cross River State, over the weekend when a 14-year-old boy named Donald, a resident of Ekondo street living with his grandmother, took his own life using a shoelace.

On Saturday, October 28, the young boy allegedly committed suicide by tying a shoelace around his neck. According to a report from Vanguard, a friend named Eyo disclosed that Donald had completed his morning chores and then went to purchase fufu, a local cassava meal. Unfortunately, that was the last time anyone saw him alive.

Eyo explained, "After going to buy the fufu, nobody heard from him again until about 12 noon when the grandmother called a carpenter to help bring the boy down from where he was leaning against the wall with a rope around his neck."

The carpenter, inquiring about the situation, received no clear response from the grandmother, which prompted him to raise an alarm and swiftly exit the premises.

Eyo added, "Nobody heard any noise from the compound until the carpenter ran out and raised the alarm, and we all rushed into the compound. The boy's legs were on the floor, and there was no table or object that the boy could have climbed on to fix his head in the noose. The string around his neck was just a shoelace."

Remarkably, neither the police nor others who arrived to assist touched the boy's body, and when the grandmother was asked to take him down, she refused.

Authorities from the Atakpa Police station are currently investigating the incident, with the State Criminal Investigation Department launching a thorough inquiry into this tragic event.
