A heartbreaking incident unfolded during what should have been a joyous honeymoon for Nate and Mariana Kuhlman, a couple from Ohio, who had recently exchanged their vows on October 28, 2023. Tragedy struck just three days after their wedding when they embarked on a trip to St. Lucia, where Nate lost his life in a waterskiing accident on October 31.
In the wake of this devastating event, the couple's friends and family mobilized support by launching two GoFundMe campaigns to assist with funeral expenses. Remarkably, the outpouring of love and compassion from the community exceeded all expectations, with one fundraiser surpassing $30,000 (£24,228) and the other amassing over $42,000 (£33,921) in donations.
On the GoFundMe page, Mariana paid a heartfelt tribute to her beloved husband, writing, "Nate was a wonderful husband, friend, son, and brother in Christ. He was able to thoughtfully encounter every person he met, and those who had the blessing of a relationship with him would be able to tell a list of stories detailing what a fun, kind, and adventurous soul he was."
The fundraiser added, "Nate tragically lost his life three days after his wedding. Words cannot describe the heartbreak there is for his story and for his family. We kindly ask for help to assist for funeral cost and travel of the family."
Nate and Mariana's love story began when they met through mutual friends, as indicated on their wedding website. The generous donors who contributed to the fundraisers inundated them with comforting comments. One donor expressed, "Words cannot express how we feel about your tragic loss. Charlene enjoyed her honor to work with Nate at her office as he was pursuing his career in medicine - he was tops both as an individual and a budding medical professional. The world has suffered a horrible loss."
Another message conveyed, "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen." A third added, "Nate was a great person with such joy."
Nate's grieving mother, Heather Kuhlman, took to Facebook to post a heartfelt tribute, sharing her profound sense of loss and the impact Nate's passing had on their lives. She wrote, "Nate’s death took all of us by surprise and just took our breath away. By God’s grace, we are ok. It’s so hard and painful, but we are walking each day one moment at a time."
Heather continued, "I am sad that Nathaniel is no longer here with us, but I know he is very much alive in heaven and will be praying for us. Please keep us in your prayers as we bring Nate home." She also mentioned that an autopsy had been conducted following her son's tragic demise, though no further details about the incident were disclosed.
The couple's journey began when they got engaged at Zion National Park in Utah in December of the previous year. Their social media pages, filled with cherished memories, featured the last poignant photos celebrating their upcoming wedding. Among these photos, Nate's final post showcased the moment he proposed, capturing a precious memory of their love and the bright future that was tragically cut short.
