Former President Goodluck Jonathan expressed relief during his congratulatory visit to Governor Duoye Diri in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, on Friday, November 17.
He stated that if Diri had lost the recent governorship election, he would have relocated his mother from Bayelsa State. Jonathan emphasized that the potential fallout from such an electoral loss could have exacerbated insecurity in the state.
During the visit, Jonathan urged the public to accept the election results, asserting that the election had been conducted fairly and that Governor Diri emerged victorious. He emphasized the need for unity and support for the governor to ensure the state's progress.
Jonathan highlighted the strides made in addressing security challenges over the past three years, including improvements in combating cultism and kidnapping.
He shared personal experiences of the impact of insecurity on his family, revealing that he had contemplated relocating his mother to Abuja if Diri had not secured victory. Jonathan disclosed that one of his cousins, Solo, had been kidnapped and tragically killed during one of the incidents.
Citing the progress made in enhancing peace and security in Bayelsa State, Jonathan urged citizens to remain calm and allow Governor Diri to focus on governance.
He stressed the importance of sustaining the positive momentum to propel the state forward for the benefit of its residents.
