Some members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have made allegations against certain politicians and police officers, accusing them of disrupting the gubernatorial elections in Obinaocha Nkwerre, located in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, and forcibly disarming NSCDC personnel.
The gubernatorial election in the state unfolded on November 11, and disturbing reports have emerged regarding interference with the electoral process.
A video circulating on social media features an NSCDC official claiming that individuals identified as 'Oyi' and 'Chinasa Nwaneri' dispatched an Inspector of police, known as 'Kill and Bury,' to sabotage the election proceedings in the area.
The NSCDC personnel present asserted that they managed to resist these disruptors, and they pointed fingers at Chisom Ojukwu, the representative of Nkwerre, alleging that Ojukwu had a hand in orchestrating the attack.
Addressing the situation, ASC Polycarp, the NSCDC commandant on the scene, expressed concern about what he referred to as the recruitment of individuals lacking education into the system.
He emphasized the national importance of their work and criticized the involvement of police officers in election-related disturbances, stating, "The only problem we have in the country is recruiting illiterates in the system. We are doing a National job. Those people that came here are police. The police are not supposed to work for anybody because this is an election."
During the discussion, another NSCDC official interjected, revealing that the disruptors had confiscated their ammunition.
The incident highlights the challenges faced in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and raises questions about the role of law enforcement in elections.
