Leading Nigerians is a formidable challenge, says Buhari

In his first interview since ceding the presidency to President Bola Tinubu in May, former President Muhammadu Buhari has asserted that he gave his best during his eight-year tenure as Nigeria's leader.

Buhari, acknowledging the challenging nature of leading Nigerians, stated that he leaves it to the people to judge whether his performance as president was satisfactory.

"I did my best. But whether my best was good enough, I leave for people to judge," Buhari said during the interview.

He highlighted the inherent challenges in governing a populace that is assertive about its rights, noting that Nigerians closely scrutinize the actions of their leaders, making it necessary to continuously prove competence.

Responding to a question about whether his government may have been influenced by a cabal, Buhari acknowledged the possibility, stating that it "must have been."

However, he added that he was uncertain if anyone who had violated the law was allowed to go unpunished.
