Obiageli Ezekwesili Criticizes Judiciary's Role in Akpabio's Senate Presidency

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has expressed her disapproval of the Nigerian Judiciary, asserting that Senate President Godswill Akpabio would not have attained the position of senator, let alone Senate President, if not for the alleged corruption within the judicial system. Ezekwesili made these remarks in response to the recent clash between Akpabio and some members of the minority group in the Senate on November 21.

In a post shared on her social media handle on Wednesday, November 22, Ezekwesili condemned the perceived decline in Nigerian democracy, attributing it to what she called the "rottenness" of the country's Judiciary, particularly the Court of Appeal. She accused the judiciary of allowing itself to be corrupted and captured by politicians, thus enabling figures like Akpabio to rise to power.

Ezekwesili pointedly criticized Akpabio, stating that he is entangled in a web of hubris. She quoted Marianne Williamson, reminding Akpabio and others in power that empires often believe they are indestructible but are ultimately unsustainable.

Acknowledging the opposition party's response to the situation, Ezekwesili commended Senators such as Senator Nwoye and Senator Ireti Kingibe from the Labor Party for raising their voices against what she described as the "Monopoly Democracy" of the political class. She urged lawmakers to focus on matters that impact the citizens who elected them and to use their mandate to lead the way out of the perceived political entrapment exemplified by figures like Akpabio.
