Elon Musk's recent experiences have taken a toll on his mental well-being, according to author Ben Mezrich.
The Twitter CEO, who now oversees the platform under the name X, reportedly faced a challenging time after being booed at a comedy show, leading to a potential mental breakdown.
Mezrich revealed on CNBC that Musk locked himself in his office, prompting concerns among Twitter employees, who considered calling in a wellness check by the San Francisco police.
Mezrich suggested that Musk's deep concern for his reputation played a significant role in these struggles. The author, known for "Breaking Twitter," emphasized that Musk has undergone a transformation since acquiring Twitter in 2022, stating, "Twitter broke Elon Musk."
Mezrich pointed out that Musk not only disrupted the global town hall aspect of the platform but also negatively impacted himself in the process.
The alleged decline in Musk's mental health is attributed by Mezrich to a series of negative incidents in the past year.
One notable event was Musk being booed at Dave Chapelle's show in San Francisco, where the comedian humorously remarked on Musk's unexpected reception. Musk responded on Twitter, acknowledging the boos and sarcastically attributing them to offending San Francisco's "unhinged leftists."
According to Mezrich, this incident marked a turning point for Musk, who was reportedly shocked by the audience's reaction. Additionally, the author claimed that Musk's mental state was further affected by a disturbing incident involving his son.
In December 2022, an unidentified man allegedly tailed a car carrying Musk's then-2-year-old son and climbed on top of the vehicle. The masked man later identified himself as an Uber driver named Brandon Collado, accusing Musk of stalking him and his family.
Adding to the complexity of Musk's mental health, the Wall Street Journal reported in June that he uses Ketamine to treat depression. Musk, who has Asperger's syndrome, had previously opened up about his mental health in 2017, suggesting that he may also suffer from bipolar disorder. These various challenges seem to have contributed to a difficult period for Musk, both personally and professionally.
